At Lochtree, we are committed to rethinking our relationship with the environment. Taking care of the Earth is not just a marketing strategy for us — it’s who we are. Our planet’s rich natural resources make life possible for each of us.
Of all Earth’s natural resources, one of our most precious is water. Water is the lifeblood of our planet. Every living thing, from the largest whale to the tiniest bean sprout, needs clean water to survive and thrive. In fact, water’s role in supporting life is so crucial that NASA’s unofficial motto in searching for life on other planets is to “follow the water.”1 Water is inextricably connected to human and environmental health. We rely on it for drinking, growing food, cleaning, recreation, and so much more. Yet access to clean water is often taken for granted.
A staggering 785 million people around the world lack access to this basic necessity.2 To put that in perspective, this means 1 in 9 people live without reliable ways to get clean water.
For many of us, going through life without drinkable water is difficult to imagine. But for those 785 million people, the search for clean water is a grim daily reality — and it affects their health, their livelihoods, and even their educational opportunities.
As a global community, we’re working together to tackle the many environmental concerns we face. In the midst of all this, ensuring the health and viability of our water systems stands as a central issue.
Immense challenges threaten our planet’s clean water supply. We believe efforts to combat these challenges can be broken down into four main areas:
These four pillars are essential to overcoming the fundamental struggles the global community faces with water. We at Lochtree believe in taking a step back to understand these issues — then stepping up to do our part in solving them.
We are dedicated to playing an active role in tackling the challenges surrounding water. This has led us to partner with OffGridBox™, an organization on the front lines of the fight for water access. We have committed to offering financial support as OffGridBox continues to champion the cause of bringing clean water to more people around the world.
OffGridBox is an all-in-one sustainable solution providing clean water and solar power to people in remote areas. OffGridBox is the brainchild of founders Emiliano Cecchini and Davide Bonsignore. They have been implementing their technology since 2014, beginning with a project they worked on together with the international NGO Oxfam in South Africa.
Since then, the company has placed over 80 solar-powered boxes in a dozen countries. These units serve thousands of people in difficult circumstances and are mostly run by local women, trained by OffGridBox and empowered to help their own communities.
Projects run by OffGridBox range from disaster relief to rural electrification. Most recently, they have taken on desalination as a new challenge, aiming to supply coastal and island communities with fresh water.
OffGridBox is headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The company's mission is to accelerate the transition of communities to an era of resilience through affordable clean water and off-grid energy hubs. For more information about OffGridBox, please visit www.offgridbox.com.
